A sustainable landmark in the Icelandic landscape

Situated amongst Icelandic caves, ancient craters, and geothermal zones, The Cinematic Crater offers spectacular views and a unique experience for visitors. The design is inspired by the surrounding craters, and the curved form mirrors the natural curves of the landscape. The accessible roof and a strategic south-facing orientation provide panoramic views towards Hverfjall and the surrounding mountains.

The pavilion is built on sustainable principles, primarily in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and with a polycarbonate façade. These materials enable rapid and efficient construction whilst reducing environmental impact. The energy-efficient polycarbonate façade contributes to the building's durability and lower maintenance costs. Economic considerations have also influenced the design, with prefabricated CLT panels and polycarbonate making production and assembly more efficient.

The building houses a cinema hall for 50 people, a drive-in cinema in the parking area, and a walkway connecting the building to the landscape. A green courtyard functions as a sheltered, relaxing oasis – open even when the building is closed.

Construction and sustainability

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) was chosen for its sustainability and strength, making it particularly suitable for Iceland's weather and remote conditions. The façade panels, made from locally produced aluminium, reflect Iceland's commitment to renewable resources. The aluminium is recyclable and of high quality.

Channel glass, made from recycled glass, offers excellent insulation properties and contributes to energy efficiency. Polycarbonate panels, also made from recycled material, have a long lifespan and low energy requirements.

Inside, there is a café and bar, a gallery for Icelandic film history, a cinema hall, and several lounge areas. The use of timber and translucent glass creates a comfortable and warm atmosphere.

Inspired by Icelandic cinema

The project draws inspiration from Icelandic cinema and the dramatic landscapes often depicted in films. The building integrates naturally into the terrain, and the accessible roof provides a magnificent view. On dark nights, the pavilion appears as a glowing landmark in the landscape.

The Cinematic Crater is a sustainable, iconic, and sensory destination that honours Iceland's unique cultural and natural heritage.
