A mixed-use project with urban qualities and human scale
This project at Pettersborggata 7A–B is a complex residential and commercial building, developed with a focus on urban qualities, accessibility, and excellent adaptation to the surrounding small-scale residential development. The building takes the classic gable roof form as its starting point but is refined with a modern volumetric composition and precise recesses that give it a sculptural and distinctive appearance.
Volume and roofscape
The building mass is divided into smaller volumes with varying ridge heights and offsets. This breaks down the scale and creates the experience of several individual houses rather than one large unit. The result is a building that harmonises with the small-house character of the area whilst providing a clear architectural expression.
Materiality and façade expression
The façades are planned with horizontal timber cladding, featuring recessed sections in darker materials to create depth and variation. Rhythmic window placements and balconies are carefully detailed to balance light, views, and privacy – whilst adding a tactile dimension to the building envelope.
Commercial space and street activation
The lower ground floor (U1) houses workspaces and commercial areas with direct access from the street. The transparent façades help to activate the street level and create life and safety in the urban space.
Light and spatial experience
The apartments from the third floor upwards are designed with double-height ceilings in the living areas, large glazed surfaces, and open-plan layouts that provide a generous sense of space and ample daylight. The sloping roof surfaces guide the light in and create varying ceiling heights, adding character and quality to the homes.
Urban space and outdoor areas
Between the buildings, a semi-private, sheltered courtyard is formed, providing residents with excellent outdoor amenity spaces offering light and shelter from the weather and overlooking.
The project unites modern living qualities with a small-scale context, facilitating an urban, inclusive, and vibrant living environment in the heart of Tromsø – with high architectural quality and a clear human focus.
