Architectural renewal in Tromsø
This project marks a complete transformation of an existing commercial building in Tromsø. The original building, a low and horizontal structure in glass and steel with simple industrial lines, has now been transformed into a sculptural building with a distinct public character.
Through rhythmic vertical elements, varying heights, and tactile material use, the building has gained a new and vibrant architectural expression. The vertical timber slats add depth, create a play of light, and give the façade a sense of movement and rhythm.
The volume has been refined to appear more inviting and inclusive, with a clearly defined main entrance and natural gathering spots in front of and around the building. The landscape interventions in the entrance zone handle level differences seamlessly, whilst vegetation and amenity zones are integrated as an extension of the building's architecture.
The material palette balances the robust and the warm: the timber cladding anchors the building to the site and provides a natural touch, whilst large glazed areas open the building towards the surroundings and create visual contact between outdoors and indoors – even during the polar night.
Through this refurbishment, an outdated office building has been given new life as a landmark building with a strong identity, new function, and an architectural expression that strengthens both the immediate area and the cityscape.
