This modern cabin project is beautifully situated in Lyngen, offering spectacular views towards the fjord and mountains. The cabin is designed with a clear functional zoning and a sculptural form that highlights both the architecture and the surrounding landscape.
The plan layout is carefully considered: service functions such as the bathroom, garage, storage, and corridor are positioned towards the access side, providing natural visual screening from the road and ensuring tranquillity for the living and sleeping areas. The three bedrooms and the spacious living area open up to the landscape through large glazed areas. To provide privacy from nearby neighbouring plots, the façades facing the neighbours are entirely windowless.
The volume highlights two central areas of the cabin: the master bedroom at one end and the living room at the other, both featuring curved forms that are echoed in the interior design. These organic curves give the building a soft character and underscore the project’s unique formal expression.
The spa area serves as the cabin’s social and functional core. Situated between the living area and the bedrooms, it functions as a quiet and relaxing meeting point – a natural place for gathering after skiing, hiking, or quiet weekends by the fireplace.
The cabin combines functionality, orientation towards the views, and architectural identity in a design language that is both modern and adapted to the dramatic landscape of the north.
Challenges
Views of nature vs. privacy from road and neighbours
The cabin is situated in an exposed landscape with magnificent views, yet close to both the access road and neighbouring plots, requiring a solution to screen private zones.
Dense neighbouring development on the sides of the plot
Properties along the lateral sides limited the potential for open façades and required a layout that safeguarded both privacy and views.
Solutions
Functional zoning based on orientation and needs
Functions such as the garage, bathroom, and storage are placed towards the road to create a visual barrier, whilst living areas and bedrooms face the views and mountains.
Solid façades facing neighbours
Windowless walls are positioned towards neighbouring plots, providing privacy whilst reinforcing the building’s sculptural character.
Architectural identity with curved forms
Curved corners and soft lines give the cabin a distinctive and calm form, which is continued in the interior to create a cohesive expression.
Spa area as core and meeting point
In the centre of the cabin lies a spa zone acting as a transition space between privacy and community – adding an extra dimension of quality to the project.
Strong focus on view axes and landscape
The cabin opens up with large glazed areas towards the fjord, and the layout is shaped so that all living areas receive maximum contact with nature.
